An Overview
of the Silk Painting Workshop
The class will start with an overview
of required supplies, optional supplies,
and workable alternatives. You will
learn where to get them, why they
are needed and the basics of using
them. We will discuss the importance
of the frame: what you should look
for when you shop for one and various
methods of building your own. You
will be introduced to the colors
and the fabric. The dye used in
this workshop is actually a free
flowing liquid color paint that
is easily heat fixed using an iron.
The resists are water soluble. And,
because a light plain weave is best
to start with, the silks used are
a light weight Habotai, either pre-hemmed
or off the bolt depending on the
project.
At this workshop you will learn,
in a hands on manner, how to prepare
and stretch your silk. You will
create a design on the fabric, apply
the resist, and then the dyes. Using
both the Serti Method (containing
colors with resist) and Wet on Wet
(free flowing color application),
you will discover the excitement
of silk painting. You will be able
to experiment with salts and alcohol
for various effects, learn how to
flow rich colors into a blend, and
turn inevitable "mistakes" into
moments of inspiration.
Silk
painting is not a difficult art
but is also not an art for a perfectionist,
even when the artist is experienced.
And it certainly would take more
than two days to become at all proficient.
However proficiency is not the goal
of the workshop. The goal is to
learn a little, laugh a lot and
become sufficiently infatuated with
the process that you are driven
to continue silk painting once you
get home.
