Les
Anderson is driven to create.
He has no option. He must paint.
Or wither. (Quoted from "More
About Les" by Cap'n Fatty
Goodlander)
The Syzygy Gallery in Coral Bay
offers a small but rich selection
of Les Anderson's art including
a series of limited edition copperplates,
oil enhanced Gicléesas
well as some figure drawings and
original paintings.
Les was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
and raised in California where
he was raised by his artist mother,
Mannette Bock, who worked for
the Walt Disney Studios. Attempting
to reconcile his need to create
and his fascination with anything
mechanical, Les graduated with
a degree in technical illustration.
After graduating Les joined the
Navy and was sent to Vietnam where
he served running a Swift patrol
boat. Returning to civilian life
Les followed his mother to St.
John where he fell in love with
the tropics, with sailing, and
where he matured as an artist.
Since then Les has created a
pictorial history of the west
Indies from sailing adventures
on his home built schooner "Penelope".
His versatility is expressed through
drawing, painting and sculpture.
Les' images are as diverse as
the cultures found throughout
the caribbean. They are touching
reminders of a rich history striving
to exist in this modern world.
Les has sailed, lived, and painted
in various areas of the Caribbean
including Martinique, and St Barts
in the French West Indies, always
returning to his favorite Virgin
Island, St. John, where he continues
to paint, sculpt and draw.
