Shira
Sofer: Born in Isreal,
Shira Sofer received her Bachelor
of Science in Studio Art and
Art History, Magna Cum Laude,
from New York University where
she also earned her Master's
degree in Arts and Humanities.
Before moving to the VI Shira
worked in New York with LEAP (the
learning through Expanded Arts
Program) Boys Harbor, Inc., The
Center of African Art and the
Studio Museum in Harlem.
In 1991 Shira moved to St John.
She taught Art History at the
St Thomas campus of University
of the Virgin Islands as well
as at several elementary schools
on St Thomas and St John.
In 2001 Shira curated an exhibition
of Virgin Island artist's works
called "Africa in the Heart
of the Virgin Islands" that
has traveled to the Mattye Reed
African Heritage Center in Greensboro,
North Carolina.
Shira continues to teach art
history at St John Gift Hill School
as well as makes jewelry and raising
2 young sons.
