Stendahl-McLeod, a
self taught artist was born
in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania
and moved to Connecticut in
1957 where she travelled and
painted views from coast to
coast. Touring the interior
and entire coast of Portugal,
Spain, and France and camping
at remote locations, she found
the colors of southern France
to be breathtakingly beautiful
as shown in the soft hues of
the canvases that resulted.
In 1990 she began to spend much
of her time in the US Virgin Islands
on St. Thomas and St. John where
she camped on the shorelines and
in the mountains. Taken by the
beauty and color of the Caribbean
Sea she painted with a rich blend
of colors depicting her scenes
with impressionistic magic and
dreamy softness. Her studio in
the Caribbean is her houseboat
on St. Thomas.
Shirley's oils, watercolors and
limited edition prints are exhibited
and collected internationally.
She is a member of the St. Thomas-St.
John Art Council in the USVI as
well as the Westport Art Center,
The Art Society of Greenwich and
the Sarasota, FL, Art Center.
